▲Donnafugata Castle (Castello di Donnafugata)

Originally a farmhouse, this property was transformed in the 19th century into a Neo-Gothic castle by Baron Corrado Arezzo de Spuches, a journalist and influential politician of his day (he had enough clout to reroute train tracks to pass closer to his property). Corrado enjoyed traveling abroad and brought home architectural ideas to incorporate into his fanciful palace. What he created is a textbook example of the mix-and-match Historicism of the Romantic Age. It’s a big, blocky house anchored by medieval-style, round, crenellated towers, with faux-Venetian Gothic window frames. While Europe has plenty of country estates that are more impressive and more enjoyable to tour (this barely cracks the top 50), they’re relatively rare in Sicily, making this a unique opportunity to get a taste of rural aristocratic life. Along with the castle, you can stroll the gardens in the 20-acre park and visit the interesting and well-explained costume museum (MU.DE.CO).
